Glastonbury Lineup Announced

27 03 2013

Large Version

Leave it to Glastonbury to make a mockery of all the festivals we North American hold dear. Despite the hundreds of festivals that pop up left, right and centre this year’s Glastonbury lineup proves why it’s the one of the world’s greatest. The headliners for the festival are Arctic Monkeys, THE ROLLING STONES, Mumford & Sons, Vampire Weekend, and CHIC FT NILE RODGERS. Mind you those are just headliners, the rest of the artists are the best of the best spanning a multitude of different genres. Plus there’s more artists to be announced before the festival actually kicks off. Before I leave you to salivate and convince your friends that plane tickets to England aren’t that expensive here are my favorites from the lineup:

  • Arctic Monkeys
  • The Rolling Stones
  • Mumford & Sons
  • Vampire Weekend
  • Primal Scream
  • Elvis Costello
  • Ben Howard
  • HAIM
  • Portishead

Tuxedo – Tuxedo EP

26 03 2013

Alright so it seems like a funk/soul epidemic has hit the web and I am just having the time of my life. This band Tuxedo, just came out of the blue and set the blog world ablaze. This stuff sounds straight off of a Mayer Hawthorne album and I mean that as a big compliment. The EP is free to download and features three funky tracks. It ranges from the smoothness of “Do It” to the bouncy California sounds of “So Good” and ends with the superb slow jam “Get You Home.” I could’ve sworn that Jimmy Fallon was going to make a surprise appearance on the last track to slow jam the news.

Robin Thicke – Blurred Lines (ft TI & Pharrell)

20 03 2013

The return of Justin Timberlake’s falsetto seems to have lured Robin Thicke out of hiding. Robin Thicke, to the surprise of pretty much everyone, released a new track today called “Blurred Lines” and gets Pharrell and TI to lend a helping hand. The track is funky, playful and completely unlike anything on the radio right now. It instantly transported me to a time when no one knew who Justin Bieber, Katy Perry or Kesha were. I’m definitely not complaining.

The Strokes – Comedown Machine (Album Stream)

18 03 2013

ALBUM STREAM

The Strokes surprised fans with a full stream of their new album “Comedown Machine” on Pitchfork one week before it hits shelves. I can’t wait to sink my teeth into this record. I’ll let you know my initial thoughts on The Strokes’ latest effort this week once I’ve given the whole thing a couple listens. Same thing with JT’s new LP.

Vampire Weekend – Diane Lane/Step

18 03 2013

I have to be honest, I wasn’t that excited about Vampire Weekend’s upcoming album “Modern Vampires of the City.” Their last album didn’t really do it for me and with so many albums coming out this year, they just faded into the background. But that was before I heard these two magnificent tracks.

“Diane Young” brings a 50s dance-vibe alongside signature twists from the band like frenetic drumming, vocal pitch bends and some scratchy guitar solos. The result is a song that sounds classic yet fresh and how can you not love the perfect breakdown that puts a spotlight on Ezra Koenig’s amazing vocals.

“Step,” on the other hand, is a ballad that feels much more typical of Vampire Weekend. There’s even baroque harpsichord opening! Who knew? All jokes aside, this is an elegant and sweet number that will no doubt be featured in many indie rom-coms.

Vampire Weekend has succeeded in peaking my interest with two awesome but very different songs that restore my faith in the Brooklyn four-piece. If the rest of the album is anything like this, I’m in 100%.

Grizzly Bear – Gun-Shy (Lindstrom Remix)

15 03 2013

There are two massive musical events this week. SXSW for the indie-grassroots scene and Ultra Music Festival for everything related to dance music. In honor of this amazing time to be a music fan I’m posting this stunning remix of Grizzly Bear’s “Gun-Shy.” I first heard this on the February episode of Fool’s Gold Radio and instantly fell in love. Lindstrom transforms the sombre original into a funk pool-side tune that whisks you away from the clutches of real life. It perfectly bridges the world of EDM and the indie scene. I’ll close this out with a quote from the one and only A-Trak:

“Piano, percussion and a little arpeggio is all I need to be in a good mood.”

Frank and Oak: A Simple, Stylish Startup

14 03 2013

It’s not often that I post on this blog about any other than music. In fact, I can’t even remember the last time I did something like that but I’m so impressed by Montreal startup Frank & Oak that I had to write about them and spread the word. Simply put, Frank and Oak designs, manufactures and sells quality clothes directly to their customers. Their main demographic is male twenty-somethings that either don’t like or don’t have the time to properly shop for new clothes. Each item is under $50, with the exception of blazers and jackets. If you join The Hunt Club, their main service, you get an email at the start of each month to pick 3 things to try on. The clothes get shipped to you, you try them on, and pay only for whatever you decide to keep. In addition to this, based on a brief survey and your monthly choices, the company begins to provide you with clothing suggestions based on your style preferences. It really doesn’t get much easier.

Obviously none of this means anything if the clothes aren’t quality or don’t fit. Fortunately, Frank and Oak strikes a home run in both of those categories. This month I ordered 3 items, a new haven crimson shirt, a blue dawson varsity jacket and a ranford cardigan in charcoal. I’m always skeptical of trying on new brands since I have a slim figure and most clothes are too big on me. All of the items that I ordered were in a S size and the shirt and cardigan fit me perfectly. Being an online service of off-the-rack clothing it can be hard to get sizing right, but the site does a good job of sizing you based on other brands that fit you.

Look what came in the mail!

I was very impressed with the quality of the clothing I received. The crimson shirt had just the right amount of thickness but the material was still soft. One of my pet peeves with getting shirts is that the collar is either too floppy and casual or too rigid and formal. The shirt from Frank and Oak struck a good balance between the two and is great for working in a business casual environment or going out for drinks with friends. The cardigan was a great fit too and super comfortable as it’s made of 100% cotton. Unfortunately, the varsity jacket was too big even though it was the same size as the shirt and cardigan but I was actually a bit relieved since I had only intended to keep one item this month.

The return process for the varsity jacket was incredibly simple. I just had to log onto the website, indicate the items I was keeping and print out a return label. I packed the jacket back into the box it came in and taped the return label. Frank and Oak covers shipping both ways so the process was painless and easy.

Overall, I’m incredibly impressed with Frank and Oak. Their unique service makes it easy to update your wardrobe and stay on top of the curve. Additionally, by handling everything from design to point-of-sale the clothes are able to be high quality without breaking the bank. Finally, their fresh new additions each month combined with great editorial content creates a truly unique experience that every guy should try at least once.

Stoop Kids – The Groove (ft Josh Gotoy)

12 03 2013

I post a lot of upbeat, pop-centric music on this blog so it’s really awesome when I’m able to find that’s just pure groovy. That’s exactly what this track is. A soulful, indie take on Hip-Hop that you’d expect to hear from Vic Mensa or Nico Segal from Kids These Days. Stoop Kids’ album “What a World” is full of these retro-inspired jams that harken back to the good old days of blues and doo wops.

You can download the band’s album from their Bandcamp.

Little Daylight – Overdose

12 03 2013

So apparently I’ve been living under a rock since I just heard this track today. Indie-pop trio “Little Daylight” captured the hearts of bloggers and soared to no. 1 on The Hype Machine when they released this track. It’s not surprising given the hypnotic nature of the song. “Overdose” will draw you in with it’s irresistible groove but you’ll stay for the vocals that are simultaneously playful, sultry and inviting. The band has been named one to watch at SXSW 2013. Not a bad start.

The Colourist – Little Games

11 03 2013

With daylight savings time setting in full effect, I’m getting geared up for Spring and of course – Summer. “Little Games” by indie rock band, “The Colourist” is the perfect song for getting out of the dark and dreary Winter mood and into the joyous abandon of Spring. Every second of this song should inject with a little happiness until you’re smiling from ear to ear. Expect big things from this band.
